The Rohirrim councillor bows his head in the direction of the elf.
It is true that we men of the Mark are seldom great scholars or learned travellers, but there are those among us who keep and remember the songs of old that tell our history.
So we sing of the times of our dwelling in the high vales of Anduin the Great that we called Langflood, before Eorl the Young led the Eorlings to the aid of Gondor and received as thanks the Mark of Rohan, when men and elves took arms together against Easterlings and Dol Guldur. And some songs, so distant they are hardly more than myth, tell of times even further past when Elves still dwelt in many places and their customs were not unkown to men.
Long does it seem to us, but it has been but 500 years since the Eorl the Young and even our mythical leaders of old we place well into what is called by the wise the Third Age. Yet, to an elf, such time means little. Perhaps one day you may share your knowledge of these pasts, that we may learn more of our own ancestry.
But for now, there are pressing matters in the present. As I see it, three dangers assault us at present. The Misty Mountains and Dunland are aswarm with orcs, evil men and other foul creatures. Dol Guldur continues to corrput the Mirkwood. And Mordor grows ever stronger, testing our power. I believe Dol Guldur to be the least of these evils, if such evil can be called least, but its removal would give us room to breathe.

A messenger arrives, whispering to the Eorling ambassador, who stands and speaks: It appears my voice is the only one speaking in these halls. Thengel, King of the Mark sends the following news: ![](http://tolkiengateway.net/w/images/c/cc/Brothers_Hildebrandt_-_Gh%C3%A2n-buri-Gh%C3%A2n.jpg) Erkenbrand, Lord of the Westfold has entered the Drúwaith Iaur and established peacable relations with the local inhabitants, a race of small men. They have agreed to allow the Eorlings rights of pasture and passage, in return for which these Drúedain will be placed under the protection of the King of the Mark. ![](http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/9272/gamling.jpg) Meanwhile, in a bid to secure the West-mark, Gamling, Second Marshal of the Riddermark continues to bring the Enedwaith under our influence. He has encamped before the ancient but depopulated town of Lond Daer and is in the process of negotiations with locals. ![](http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/1920/ridersu.jpg) Finally, Théoden, First Marshal of the Riddermark is set to enter Gondorian lands with a small but potent force of cavalry. We would ask the ambassador of Minas Tirith how he would have us aid them in securing the passages of the Anduin. We would stress that we Eorlingas are little suited to the task of garrisoning forces. However, if Ecthelion, Steward of Gondor would have us remain for an extended period of time, we will need a stronghold in which to base our forces, so far from our own lands.
