Alright, as far as I know, this is everyone's faction choice:
Banzai Kamikaze: Gondor Deguerra: Rohan Ramses II CP: Dwarves Zim: Silvan Elves Flax: High Elves

Ramses, I tried the dwarves for about 10 turns and I was massacred by the orc of the misty mountains who came out of nowhere from the north... This is just a friendly warning ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) They seem to be very powerful according to the forums though.

rotfl, I haven't had a lot of time to goof off with them, and I'm just installing the patch now, but... I will not fall to the Orcs. No matter bloody what. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

I have to add my sympathies. I'm not sure how difficult they are overall compared to other factions, but I can say that trying to chase those Snagas around is a huge pain. You can get some merc cavalry near Dale, but I'd use them sparingly. They seem rather fragile.

From what I just read on the forum it seems like auto-calc is a good option for the Dwarves when faced with cavalry. I may very well just organize my stacks for auto-calc value and let the AI handle the chasing.
Haven't seen any mercs yet.

AUtocalc supposedly favors factions with large unit sizes, although none of those have much cavalry for the early part of the game (until wargs are available).
The only thing I'd keep in mind is that the modders themselves say the game isn't balanced for autocalc by the player and consider it sort of cheating...
Personally, I find it always results in more casualties for me and less for the enemy, so I'm not sure what they're worried about. ;D
You have military access with Dale. Just move your king or another noble a bit south of Erebor and you can recruit cavalry. I found one near that eastern castle as well, but it took a while. I think the pool is very slow there, but faster south of the Lonely Mountain.
Dale Cavalry isn't bad, better than militia, but I find myself being careful with them and using them only for routing. Orcish units are in such big numbers they can take quite a few cav out before they can pull out after charging.
