There are many mods for the Third Age mod, some minor, some major. Banzai suggested we use a few, but I want to have a little discussion about that. What mod would be good for us? Do we need a mod? Mods for Third Age can be found here: www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1154

we should definitely use real combat + RR lore edition. It requires just one moment of tweaking, so we all have to agree: there are three choices of cavalry charges, going from more cohesion to less cohesion but more visually impressing. I chose the file which gives a balance to both, who knows what these choices really do...
It includes some additional not overpowered units, a reworked battle and strategy AI (to make sure good and evil factions stick together), you are rewarded for beeing really evil (by burning down cities) instead of punished, hordes of gameplay tweaks (hey, I don't even know how it is in vanilla). It doesn't change much from the core gameplay, just adds some cool stuff here and there.
Now, I also added darthmod's battle AI improvement specifically made for Real combat. It looked great and the guy is a genius total war modder.
Results: can't compare to vanilla. I tried for a dozen turns. Strategy AI is interesting, factions stick together, evil raids your cities, land armies by boat on occasion (poor Gondor...), economy is very VERY important (you barely have any money and very few opportunities to expand comfortably since you'll be under pretty constant attack), and blabla, basically an interesting and challenging experience.
Battle AI results are impressive. The AI is actually intelligent, flanks you with cavalry, charges, retreats, charges again... Skirmishers and archers harass you and run when needed. Melee troops charge your lines evenly instead of running in front of your army and getting mowed down by arrows. Generals mostly stay in the back, covered by a couple of units.
Only downside is that the game crashes for me when you start every 1/3 battles roughly. Just make sure you save the game before a battle, reload if it crashes and things should be fine. Don't know why this happens.
Blabla, so I thought the game was great with the mods. But I haven't tried it without.

oh well, game crashes on occasion for me even without mods. Flax says it's stable with him. Anyway, the mods I propose definitely make the game MUCH more challenging (maybe too much for a hotseat ? heh).

I can't speak intelligently about any mods, I've barely played the vanilla version due to low time lately. I'll be fine with whatever set you guys want.

I'm more and more inclined to go for plain vanilla, for simplicity's sake. Ramses, could you please setup the game for hotseat with admin console and all that? I don't access to the console and neither does Banzai I think. So, you being admin would really help. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Well, we should at least use the good vs evil mod.
In any case, patch 1.2 is supposed to come out in a couple of weeks. Maybe we should wait until then before we start.

Heh! I'm soooo useless with the console, but if Zim doesn't want to volunteer I guess I'm nominated. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I'm fine with waiting for a patch, it'd give us a chance to let the KotF start-up rush pass.

Ok, we can wait for 2 weeks, see if the patch comes out. And then start. Now to get back to those tournament rules for KotF. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I can take care of the hotseat setup if you'd like. I've certainly done it enough times. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
